Information of Japan's Wi-Fi standards (protocols)
Japan's Wi-Fi standards (protocols)

July 2018

Japan's Wi-Fi is based on IEEEE's standards and specifications. Basically, there are six Wi-Fi standards (protocols) widely used in Japan. IEEE802.11a, IEEE802.11b, IEEE802.11g, IEEE802.11n, IEEE802.11ac, and IEEE802.11ad. 11ac is released in 2014 and is the most popular protocol in Japan now. The maximum data rate is 10 times as fast as 11n. It is ideal to use Wi-Fi routers and devices that are compatible with 11ac protocol in Japan these days.

Two frequencies are used by Japan's Wi-Fi routers and Wi-Fi enabled devices, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. 5GHz is faster and more immune to Wi-Fi interference as less devices use this frequency. But the higher frequency, 5GHz, tends to be blocked by buildings and other obstacles, thus 2.4GHz frequency has a wider wireless network area compared to 5GHz frequency. Japan's Wi-Fi routers are usually compatible with both frequencies to provide stable Wi-Fi connections.
